alter ego dillema

Even though I was updating the game for a long time, there wasn't as much updates on it on my blog. Why? I'm asking myself this question today, and hopefully I will come up with an answer.

First off, let's start with a simple dialogue that Alter Ego says at the start - "Oh? Master?". He clearly looks out for another person, that is not the player. At the start, I'm already implementing three characters - the player, Alter Ego, and Chihiro. Alter Ego is the one this game is mostly about, and I will need to think about him the most: write dialogues compatible to his character, download more sprites, think of some fancy events occuring. Why am I writing this? To put it simple: It of course may be a spoiler. I mean, why would it be, if the game is about Alter Ego already? It's not a spoiler spoiler, it more like shows out one of the first assets of the game: the script.

If the script isn't ready to be shown to public, I wouldn't want to discuss it - maybe after the demo arrives, I could give a little peek to how it started, but right now - why? Simply why should I talk about things that aren't done yet, and that really need to be changed later. That being said: the unfinished, buggy script is one of the first reasons to why I didn't made more posts about the game.

However... The script is somehow discussed in the game's "notes" file - it's a file with assets like "updates (shows up all the updates that have been done)", "to-do (shows my to-do list)", "topic list (shows all the topics I already made into the game)", and "modificating the game". The same goes for the "instructions" of the game - it shows up the name of the game, what it is about and basic questions. But it's not avaible to be seen for public, even with link - right now it's just avaible to be seen for myself.

The game's design is a thing too. It don't look cool, nor fancy, nor really good: it's plain. It's just simple. All the other menu's of the game I made, I always tried to make it look good, even with my basic knowledge of programming or art. However in Alter Ego, the most important thing is the script itself, not how it looks.

Here's an example of "Angie's ritual" game menu. It still looks simple, but it's better than the black screen with a name and "play" button Chihiro: Alter Ego have.

example of how Angie's Ritual looks

(You can play Angie's Ritual here! warning - it's not finished).

That's not all. The game is in loop - if you will want to test out the really early in development game, the text will just loop around. Some people don't want to scroll down the question's page, and they would just abandon the unfinished project - they wouldn't want to wait for something that will take a long time to finish.

My time. That's the last and biggest problem to why I didn't show up the project (I did for about, really, one day). My time - meaning my personal time, like studying. What about it? If I show up my unfinished work to people, I will feel pressured to make it something better - the bugs could occur more, because my script and coding would be fast and not that good. That being said - I don't want to pressure myself, breaking the game in response.

I think this post will clear some misunderstandings and questions.

Stay tuned,

Developer.
